Ø 8pm – Event Closes Event OverviewThe Japanese Government has held the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) every five years since 1993 in order to support economic development in African countries. Japanese companies have already initiated direct investment in Africa and Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), is engaged in providing the financial support for such projects individually. JBIC has been involved in billions of dollars of financing throughout such processes. JBIC Success Stories: Aluminium Smelting Plant in Mozambique where Mitsubishi Corporation has made an investment. Other projects supported by JBIC include Phoenix Logistics, a textile business in Uganda, and a mosquito net manufacturing business in Tanzania in which Sumitomo Chemical has made an investment. These projects are viewed as successful business models of direct foreign investment where part of the profits are returned to local communities, where social infrastructures are being built. Another ambitious project is the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) supported “One Village One Product” (OVOP), in Malawi where One village produces one competitive and staple product as a business to generate revenue and help improve the standard of living for the residents of that village. The OVOP has been introduced in a number of countries including, Malawi, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines and the process varies from country to country. Speaking at a recent conference, in the Malawi capital of Lilongwe attended by delegates from 14 states, President Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi, said the Japanese concept of “One Village One Product” (OVOP) which exploits the specific material and human resources of small communities to promote economic expansion has been key to his country’s development and could prove beneficial throughout Africa. Conference participants from Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zambia discussed the results of the Malawi project and the prospects for expanding the concept to their countries. In August 2009, the "One Village One Product" movement was launched in Uganda, a country in the Great Lakes Region of Africa.Japan International Cooperation Agency in recent years has increased its involvement in Africa and views the OVOP project as a key way to accelerate economic growth across the continent and help alleviate poverty. JBIC is looking for partners with whom it can work on long-term business relations for sustainable economic development. JBIC argues that if they can explore potential projects together with African government this will bring future progress for both Japan and Africa.Looking Ahead >>>> “Vibrant Africa is open for Business”. This event will be entirely driven by a greater focus on promoting investment and development in Africa. A dynamic opportunitity to focus on Positives, Prospects and Potentials. The event will examine the following: Ø JICA supported One Village One Product initiative - What is it exactly and how would Africa benefit from it. Highlight some examples and experiences of the OVOP approach particularly in Malawi, Africa. Ø How donors can support growth and investment in Africa. Ø Investment opportunities in Malawi - Post Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV). Ø To what extent is private sector development crucial for growth, development and the creation of employment in Africa? Ø Update on how Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) plans to stimulate business and development growth in Africa. Highlight projects in the African regions, Mozambique, Nigeria, etc. Ø Japan's plan for Africa. Post Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD).
