- Sound bites from De Beers', Andrew Bone "De Beers was established in 1888 and we have experience, obviously working in Africa and knowing what works for us and also the communities in which we operate. We are from the mining sector and very much in it for the long-term. We think that the private sector has a lot to contribute, has a lot to offer in terms of development everywhere. And we think, for example, the most sustainable development is the provision of full-time employment. I am very happy that as an African company as well, we have been one of the longest and most successful public/private partnerships with the government of Botswana and forming a company back in 1966 called Debswana. We also have similar arrangements with the government in Namibia.. We also have an extensive shareholding plan also with our operations in Southern Africa, so in all, we return something like close to $5 billion worth of dividends, royalties, taxes, to Southern Africa acting if you like as a robin hood company taking from all those rich people and giving it back to development. And I'm glad to say we are in partnership with governments who know their responsibilities to their citizens and have invested to that money wisely in infrastructure, health and education. In Botswana our JV company – Debswana – mines the massive Jwaneng and Orapa Mines. In Namibia, where onshore mining is nearing the end of its life, we have invested billions of dollars in a fleet of offshore mining vessels which lastyear for the first time produced more carats than the land-based operations. De Beers. Ms. Varda Shine, a board member of De Beers, head of DTC in the UK and South Africa and chairman of the Boards of De Beers Partner DTCs in Botswana and Namibia.
